The Victory Of the Song Contest went to Spain

PRESS RELEASE - The victory of the song contest went to Spain.

The International Young Jazz Singers Contest held on Sunday by Nõmme Jazz was won by Susana Raya (30) from Spain, who received a prize entailing an opportunity to participate in popular European jazz festivals such as Pori Jazz, Turku Jazz and Kaunas Jazz.

"I felt very good singing, especially thanks to the in-house band accompanying me. We interacted really well which helped me in expressing myself just the way I wanted," said the singer who had performed outside her native country only once. Raya added that the most important thing she was taking home from the contest and the whole jazz festival was all the acquintances she had made in Estonia among the jazz musicians coming from all over the world.

Because the main purpose of the contest was to broaden the young talented jazz singers’ opportunities to perform, none of the first three left the contest without a prize.

The Lithuanian singer Daiva Straniskaite, who came second in the contest, received invitations to sing in Rigas Ritmi, Jazzkaar and Turku Jazz and in addition, was offered the opportunity to record two songs with a legendary American trumpet player Ted Curson.

The best singer among the Estonians was the 19-year-old Kadri Voorand from Haljala, who came third in the contest and was awarded with invitations to contests such as Lady Summertime in Finland, Ladies in Jazz in Haapsalu, and was offered an invitation to give a concert in the Turkish Jazz Club " Nardis".

The favourite of the audience was the only male singer in the contest Ferhat Öz from Turkey.

He too will be recording with Ted Curson.

According to the artistic director of the festival Toivo Unt, this year’s contest was the best in many ways. "The singers showed a very high level of performance, never before had we had such a professional in-house band and band leader Siim Aimla, and thanks to Ryo Kawasaki the sound  was excellent both on stage and in the hall," said Unt.

There were 8 singers taking part in the finals. Everyone sang two songs.

The singers were accompanied by the in-house band comprising Siim Aimla (saxophone), Viktors Ritovs (keyboards), Mihkel Mälgand (double base) and Ahto Abner (drums).

The jury consisted of the representatives of the prize festivals.

The International Young Jazz Singers Contest was held for the 6th time.
